At 46, I’ve noticed the subtle but inevitable signs of aging—gray hairs creeping in, wrinkles becoming more pronounced, and a body that creaks and aches a bit more than it used to. The most challenging part? The stubborn weight gain, especially around the belly, which seems to appear overnight but takes forever to shed.

As frustrating as these changes can be, I’ve discovered a powerful tool that helps me manage them: consistency. Just as consistent, gentle care for my skin has made a noticeable difference in the appearance of wrinkles, the same principle applies to caring for my body.

The Power of Consistency

Consistency is the main ingredient for:

  • Managing chronic pain
  • Controlling weight
  • Building strength
  • Aging healthily and gracefully

Consistency doesn’t mean perfection. It means showing up for yourself day in and day out, even if the steps are small. Over time, these small steps add up to significant progress.

Learning from the Wisdom of Babies

Babies offer a perfect example of consistency in action. When a baby is learning to crawl and walk, they don’t give up when they stumble or fall. Instead, they keep moving, sometimes forward, sometimes steadying themselves on all fours, rocking back and forth to build strength for that next step. They don’t get discouraged by setbacks—they remain consistent in their practice, always moving toward their goal.

This same mindset can be applied to our fitness and wellness journeys. It’s not about pushing ourselves to the brink but about making steady, consistent progress.

Navigating the World of Information Overload

We live in a time when we’re bombarded with advice on what we “should” be doing to achieve our goals. But the truth is, what works for one person may not work for another. It’s easy to get caught up in the latest fitness trends or feel overwhelmed by the pressure to do more.

Instead of focusing on what you think you should be doing, I encourage you to focus on what you can do consistently. Start by identifying one small change that you can incorporate into your daily routine.

Finding Your First Step

Let’s say you’ve been dealing with low back pain for months, likely due to sitting for long periods at work. The typical advice might be to start working out before work, but is that really realistic for your lifestyle? If it were, you’d probably already be doing it.

Instead, consider something more manageable—like choosing three or four stretches for your back and hips and practicing them for five minutes a few times a day. This small, consistent practice is much easier to stick with than trying to force yourself to wake up early for a workout that doesn’t fit into your life.

Remember, we’re aiming for something you can do consistently. Small steps done consistently lead to significant leaps forward in the long run.

About NickiFit

Since 2014, when NickiFit A to Z began, it has been my mission to make fitness accessible to all women. Many women feel uncomfortable in a standard gym setting. Many women have had horrible experiences with past trainers who did not provide the level of care they needed. I meet clients where they are at. I recognize that not everyone is comfortable in a gym or working out in groups so I coach clients in the comfort of their own home. I guide women through efficient, effective at home workouts and help them adjust their nutrition and their habits to support the life they want to live.
